Betas can be extremely tricky to play around with especially if you are planning to perform a clean installation before moving things forward. But if you do not wish to do that then you will be pleased to learn that you can download and install the iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 betas over the air, without even losing your files and settings.

Please make sure you have a compatible iPhone or iPad on which you will be installing the new beta. There's no point in making all the effort if your device is not officially supported. Check out the list here for more details:

Keep in mind that in order to access the beta, you need to sign up to the Apple Developer Program. It costs $99 and it's absolutely not free. However, if you have patience, the update will be available to the public to test out soon, absolutely free. Those without patience may keep on reading for more.

Although an over the air installation will keep your files and settings in tact, we will still highly recommend backing up everything to a safe and secure location as chances of something going wrong are rather high with the first beta. You can backup your data using iTunes, Finder or iCloud.

Once you've confirmed that the beta works on your device and everything backed up, this is the part where we tell you that any beta is unstable software and you will run into a myriad of issues including bad battery life, app crashes and tons of UI related glitches. If you're fine with that then go ahead and install the update at your own risk.
