To Meet The High Demand, Apple is Ramping Up mini-LED Production For 2022 Devices
According to a report from DigiTimes, Apple is ramping up the production of mini-LED displays for 2022 devices. The company is gradually transitioning to the new display technology and future products will also move away from LCD panels. At this point, Apple's 12.9-inch iPad Pro, Pro Display XDR, and the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models feature a mini-LED display. This year, the company will potentially launch the 11-inch iPad Pro, 27-inch iMac Pro, and the redesigned MacBook Air with mini-LED. The company is also said to be working on an external display that will bolster the technology.
Since Apple's product count is increasing, it needs more suppliers other than Taiwan's Epistar, which is the main mini-LED supplier, to meet the high demand. The report cites that China's Sanan Optoelectronics has been granted certification to provide Apple with chips for mini-LED display. Since the company is incorporating the new display technology in upcoming devices, the demand will increase significantly this year. Epistar is also expanding its production facilities in China starting in the second quarter of this year. Sanan Optoelectronics will begin shipments during the same time frame as well.
