PC Brands Reportedly Book CXMT Memory Into 2027 as DRAM Supply Tightnes

Chinese DRAM maker, CXMT (ChangXin Memory Technology), is making significant progress. Not just major motherboard vendors are optimizing their platforms to support higher CXMT memory-based DDR5 modules, but now many vendors are securing their DRAM orders from the company as the RAMpocalypse continues to make it difficult to source enough memory chips for their devices.

According to a new report by DigiTimes, which cites supply chain sources, the demand has become so strong that CXMT's production capacity is already booked through the end of 2027. This left smaller PC vendors struggling to obtain their allocations. As per the report, every major PC manufacturer has already completed testing for CXMT memory, but securing the supply has become a real challenge as the company is reportedly prioritizing orders from its largest customers.

Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Apple are said to be among those companies that are expected to receive allocations on priority, while smaller brands could be left without any access to CXMT's DRAM production. This comes as a result of two developments. The first one is the speculation that the US had considered adding CXMT to its entity list, but delayed the move following improved US-China relations.

This move alone has reduced regulatory uncertainty, encouraging PC vendors to place long-term orders. However, the second development also reportedly contributed to the accelerated buying decisions. As per the report, Apple is also interested in buying CXMT memory, after it was known that the company has been testing the CXMT DRAM while also lobbying US officials to permit its use in products for the Chinese market instead of the US.

Now, as CXMT is receiving huge orders for its DRAM, it would significantly help PC makers in fulfilling user demands at a time when the memory prices for consumers are at an all-time high. However, this development will largely remain focused on satisfying domestic Chinese demand at the moment.
