With Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, publisher Square Enix and director Naoki Hamaguchi released one of the best entries in the series to date on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, but the game is not without flaws. Among the biggest is the flat lighting which takes much away from this otherwise stunning recreation of Gaia, but this issue was recently addressed on PC with the Shader Injector mod, whose 2.0 version is now available to deliver the series' best visuals to date.
The new version of the mod developed by David Matos, which can be downloaded from Nexus Mods, not only significantly simplifies the installation process, but also introduces compatibility improvements with another essential mod, the Async Mod, and introduces new shaders which enhance lighting both outdoors and indoors. Particularly impressive are the new Ocean and Water shaders, which completely overhaul the water, introducing significant improvements over the vanilla game.
The Shader Injector 2.0 mod also supports SSGI Ambient Occlusion and Global Illumination, but they are disabled by default, as they scale poorly with higher resolutions and the current implementation has no filtering, resulting in a lot of noise. However, future versions of the mod will improve both optimization and image quality.
Experiencing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth with the Shader Injector mod almost feels like playing a remastered version of the second entry in the Remake series, and is the best way to tide oneself over until the launch of Final Fantasy VII Revelation in Spring 2027. With the mod gaining significant traction over the weeks, it will be interesting to see if the development team will keep its improvements in mind to improve the visuals of the conclusion of the epic saga.
