While retailers are scrambling to restock their shelves with Ryzen 9 3900X CPUs as strong demand for the chips continues and supplies dwindle, AMD is hard at work on a new perhaps even more desirable 12 core processor that's expected to land soon.
AMD Ryzen 9 3900 CPU Leaked, 12 Cores & 24 Threads at 65W
Thanks to a slip-up by one of AMD's motherboard partners, we now know that the Ryzen 9 3900 definitely exists and is in fact coming rather soon. The chip was listed as part of BIOSTAR's new BIOS update for its X470NH motherboard, which will support the upcoming chip.
The Ryzen 9 3900 processor features 12 cores and 24 threads, just like the Ryzen 9 3900X. Although thanks to its more tame clock speeds, base of 3.1GHz and Turbo of up to 4.3GHz, it has managed to shave 40W off its big brother's TDP of 105W down to 65W.
It's going to be interesting to see if this chip will make it to market alongside the Ryzen 9 3950X which is now expected to land in November, or if growing demand for TSMC's 7nm process that's rumored to have constricted the company's supply is going to continue to limit supplies.
12 Zen 2 cores and 24 threads in a 65W package is quite the impressive feat. That's a whole lot of computational grunt in such a frugal power budget. I could certainly see several interesting use cases for this kind of chip, including compact video editing boxes for content creators on the go.
Thanks to the fact that all Ryzen CPUs are unlocked and overclockable, the Ryzen 9 3900 could also prove to be a popular discounted alternative to the Ryzen 9 3900X for those willing to tweak it to match, or at least get close to, its bigger brother's clocks.
