AMD's CPU market share rose in all segments compared in Q1 2019 compared to the previous year as reported by Mercury Research. The latest market share results for AMD CPUs saw a nice bump for desktops and notebook segments compared to the previous quarter.
AMD Ryzen and EPYC Continue Gaining CPU Market Share For Team Red, Desktop and Notebook Share Increased in Q1 2019, 7nm EPYC Rome Will Continue Server Momentum in 2H 2019
It looks like AMD Ryzen processors have been a fruitful investment for team red, not only leading to strong financial quarters but also continually gaining CPU market share. According to the latest figures for Q1 2019, the AMD desktop CPU market share grew by 1.3% which now sits at 17.1% & the notebook CPU market share increased by 1.0% which is now at 13.1%. Compared to last year, the gain is 4.9% for the desktop side and 5.1% for the notebook side.
These figures are interesting in the sense that AMD didn't release any major desktop processor line in the previous quarter yet managed to increase market share, even though they have a new line of processors coming in mid of 2019. There are several reasons for this, first of all, the Ryzen 1st and 2nd generation of processors have got various price cuts and retailer-specific discounts which make them a very compelling product for mainstream users.
If that's not enough, Intel has left the market completely open for AMD to dominate due to their ongoing 14nm supply issues. Intel in their recent investor meeting stated that they expect the 14nm supply issues to be entirely resolved by Q4 2019 but till then, AMD would reap the benefits. We have already seen the market reaction to Intel's supply issues with Ryzen CPUs outselling Intel CPUs by a huge margin.
The notebook segment is a major win for AMD as they delivered a really strong Ryzen 3000 series lineup at CES 2019 which is now available in notebooks from various OEMs. AMD processors with Vega onboard graphics are very popular among the masses but options exist if you want to choose from an AMD Radeon or NVIDIA GeForce GPU powered Ryzen 3000 series notebook too.

On the server side, while AMD's market share grew compared to the previous year by 1.9%, this specific quarter saw a decline of 0.3% which is largely due to the industry waiting for the 7nm EPYC Rome series processors which will be shipping in Q3 2019. AMD has secured major deals for their EPYC Rome generation of processors and U.S. DOE has already secured a deal with AMD to utilize a custom version of their future EPYC processors in the Frontier supercomputer which will deliver in 2021 and deliver an approximated 1.5 Exaflops of Compute performance.
So while the server market share for this quarter didn't rose for AMD, the next quarter would bring back the momentum as AMD approaches 10% server CPU market share by 2020. AMD is expected to announce various 7nm product lineups including 3rd Generation Ryzen and Navi GPUs in a few weeks at Computex 2019.
