XCOM 2 New Enemy & Environment Revealed; Screenshots Included

XCOM 2 welcome a new enemy to its alien cast - the Gatekeeper. A floating ball that resembles XCOM: Enemy Unknown's Cyberdisc in some way. Developer Firaxis has also shared some new info on the environments in XCOM 2.

Originally posted by IGN, XCOM 2's new enemy is a floating ball, called 'The Gatekeeper'. At first sight the keeper looks friendly, but wait until it bursts open. Check out the video down below to see The Gatekeeper in action (courtesy of IGN).

This floating ball at first looks kind of adorable in a Pixar sort of way, and seems like it should be voiced by Peter Dinklage. That is, until it busts open and reveals a Krang-like pink pulpy mass with a glowing eye and tentacles and starts zombifying anything within reach. It shares the Sectoid's ability to reanimate corpses as psi zombies (or makecorpses and then reanimate them), though it can raise several at once. Plus it has several other potent-looking psionic abilities, and, as one would expect, a death ray.

XCOM is scheduled for a release in February 2016. The game was first scheduled for a release in November this year, but was pushed back in August of this year. According developer Firaxis, they needed more time to make it the best possible game.

“We’ve set a high bar for the sequel and the entire team has been working hard to make sure we deliver a great follow-up to Enemy Unknown,” reads the statement from the XCOM 2 dev team.

The game is the sequel to the 2012 reboot of the series, XCOM: Enemy Unknown. New enemies as the Viper will be featured in the strategy title. XCOM 2 introduces a new world order where aliens rule Earth and XCOM must fight to save humanity.
