This year's Xbox Games Showcase was packed with updates for already announced games like Fable and Halo Campaign Evolved as well as new announcements for titles that are not far from release. Among them was the surprising announcement for Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, a follow-up to the action RPG developed by Team NINJA released in 2023 that will mark the debut of the studio's "Masocore" genre on a Nintendo console.
At the time, details on the new entry in the series are scarce. "The Three Kingdoms period—an era during which the land is divided into three factions, with heroes fighting for their respective beliefs. Amidst the chaos, a single warrior crosses endless battlefields overrun by grotesque demons," reads the game's official description. "In this long-awaited sequel of the dark fantasy Three Kingdoms action RPG Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, which has surpassed over 5 million players worldwide, players will master the evolved Chinese martial arts and conquer the battlefields of the Three Kingdoms alongside renowned heroes."
Although details are few, I believe the reveal trailer already shows everything that players need to know about: intense action, powerful enemies, historical figures from the late Han Dynasty mixed with demons, and combat mechanics focused on the same Deflection mechanics that have defined the experience since the beginning of the first game's development, as Team NINJA's president Fumihiko Yasuda told me back in 2022.
As mentioned above, Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember will also mark the debut of Team NINJA's "Masocore" games on a Nintendo console, as the game will launch in early 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Depending on its success on the system, there's a solid chance the second entry in the series could pave the way for ports of other games, including the Nioh series, whose third entry launched earlier this year on PC and PlayStation 5, delivering one of the best experiences from the Japanese studio.
