Android Wear has been around for quite some time now, and it has powered most of the smartwatches. However, the smartwatch OS seems to be lagging behind the Tizen OS when it comes to popularity. Tizen OS on Samsung smartwatches has surpassed Android Wear on the popularity graph.

In the latest report by Strategy Analytics, Samsung’s Tizen OS performed better than Google’s Android Wear during Q1 of 2017. This is the first time that Tizen OS holds 19% of the total market share compared to Google’s Android Wear, which retains 18% of the share. The report comes out as a shocker because the industry experts did not have high hopes from Samsung’s Tizen OS. The smartwatch OS by Samsung has not only performed well but also has made a dent in Android Wear’s popularity.

In the report, Strategy Analytics writes:

Global smartwatch shipments at 6.2 million units in Q1 2017 were up 48% YoY.  Apple’s watchOS maintained the top spot with 57% market share.  Tizen with 19% share took second place from Android Wear this quarter for the first time since Q4 2015.  Android Wear vendors together accounted 18% share and took the #3 rank.

Overall, Apple Watch OS continues to rule the number one spot. The second position is taken by Samsung’s Tizen OS while Google’s Android Wear crumbles at the third position. Apple Watch holds a whopping 51% total market share, which puts it on the way higher ground than its competitors.

The report is surprising on many levels, first being that Android Wear offers more options to consumers, but it still falls back on the popularity chart. Tizen OS is limited to Samsung’s Gear S3, Gear S2, and Gear Fit wearables, but somehow manages to strike the right chord with consumers. Android Wear has got many options on the board with some of the best smartwatches on the market. However, it needs to look back on what’s not going right.

The battle of the wearables is set to soar this year. Admittedly, many Android Wear watches are scheduled to debut with Android Wear 2.0, this year. The launch of new Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches could be a game changer.
