As Huawei gears up to launch the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, TECNO, another Chinese competitor, has obtained bragging rights by unveiling the Phantom Ultimate 2, a concept device that features not two but three displays that can be neatly folded into a compact handset, and unfolded at will, transforming into a 10-inch tablet. There are other specifications of the smartphone that will absolutely impress you, so let us get right into the details.
The TECNO Phantom Ultimate 2 is incredibly thin too, measuring just 11.1mm when folded
Even though the Phantom Ultimate 2 can be seen plainly in black and white, we do not expect TECNO to put this design on the mass production line any time soon. Regardless, even you will agree that the handset is just a marvel to look at. When completely folded, the Phantom Ultimate 2 measures just 11.1mm, making it thinner than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6, which sports a thickness of 12.1mm. Also, in this physical state, the smartphone flaunts a 6.48-inch screen, making it relatively compact.
The entire panel comprises of OLED technology, with a maximum resolution of 3K when TECNO’s brilliant concept is unfolded into a 10-inch tablet. The company claims that the hinges of the Phantom Ultimate 2 have been tested to withstand up to 300,000 folds, along with 2100MPa strength. Also, there are a multitude of complications when producing a device as thin as this, forcing TECNO to employ a new hinge design and the industry’s thinnest battery cover, which measures 0.25mm and is made up of Titan Advanced Fiber material.
While we expect applications to have some trouble adapting to the new form factor, TECNO states that it has optimized the wallpapers, which will seamlessly adjust to it. Users can take advantage of various multitasking modes to accommodate the various ways that the Phantom Ultimate 2 would be folded and unfolded. As you would have guessed, TECNO has kept the launch timeline a secret, which is unsurprising to hear.

We say this because Huawei is reported to be experiencing its share of problems with its own tri-fold smartphone, ranging from overheating to software optimizations. Additionally, the prototype alone is said to cost almost $5,000, which means that TECNO believes that this form factor is not commercially viable for the Phantom Ultimate 2 to enter mass production. Hopefully, in the near future, we envision thousands adopting tri-fold smartphones as their daily driver.
