Huawei tri-fold smartphone gets spotted again

Huawei’s former CEO of its consumer group, Richard Yu, was previously spotted with the rumored tri-fold smartphone when he was onboard a flight and was using the device completely unfolded. At that specific angle, it looked as if he was using a fully functional table. However, the same device was spotted in the executive’s hands again, completely closed, and we are thoroughly impressed with what Huawei’s engineers have been able to achieve. After all, if you take a gander at the images, the entire smartphone features a total of three razor-thin displays that are sandwiched on top of one another to complete the whole package.

Each display of the Huawei tri-fold smartphone could be thin to maintain adequate thickness when the device is folded

Foldable smartphones have been Huawei’s forte for quite a while, but this is the first time that the company has gambled with launching a handset bearing three screens. Naturally, some talented designers and clever engineering are mandatory for the displays to be exceptionally thin, or else the smartphone’s thickness will go out of control. However, an earlier rumor claimed that the company ran into thermal and software optimization problems with the tri-fold smartphone, likely due to its unique form factor, leading to its delay.

If you look at the back of the smartphone, we can see that there is a prominent rear camera bump, indicating that Huawei may outfit its tri-fold smartphone with some capable sensors. The bump appears to be protruding outward excessively, possibly because there was little to no space inside the exterior shell. Our guess is that when the tri-fold smartphone is completely folded, it could be no thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold 6, but we can only give an official verdict when the device is officially here.

Based on an earlier rumor, Huawei was exploring ways to reduce the production cost of the smartphone, with the prototype alone estimated to cost almost $5,000. Given that the production run may be small, Huawei could price the tri-fold smartphone at slightly over $4,000, which is still more than twice as expensive as the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Regardless, the fact that the handset has allegedly been pictured once more in the hands of a Huawei executive suggests that it is being taken through its paces with field testing. Hopefully, a mass production target will be reached soon.
