Google Releases the First Wear OS 5 Developer Preview with Better Battery Life

Aside from rolling out Android 15 Beta 2 to all supported Pixel devices, the company has also launched the first Wear OS 5 developer preview, which is now available for developers. Although Google has not provided much detail, the one thing we know is that the new update will improve the battery life of supported smartwatches.

Wear OS 5 is based on Android 14 and is largely focused on improved battery life across the board

Now, Wear OS-powered smartwatches are a great alternative for those who are looking for a non-Apple smartwatch, but the battery life is hit-and-miss. However, with Wear OS 5, the company looks to fix that, as you will get a chance to have a better-performing smartwatch in terms of overall battery life.

When it comes to improving the Wear OS, Google does not shy away from taking help from the best in the industry. Samsung and Google have worked closely over the past couple of years to make the experience even better, and this year's primary focus for Google is to ensure that the battery life of Wear OS 5 watches is much better. That is why the company has talked about how “running a marathon consumes up to 20% less power on Wear OS 5.” This is impressive, to say the least, and of course, the improved battery life will reflect on other aspects of the devices, too.

In addition, Google is also making sure that developers are working on watch faces that do not consume a lot of battery. With the upcoming Wear OS 5, there will be a newer version of the Watch Face Format designed to let the operating system optimize the performance of the watch face, allowing the developers to focus more on the design. The new version focuses on various aspects to make the user experience even better than before.

Last but not least, Google has confirmed that Wear OS 5 is based on Android 14. What this means for the users is that there is a chance that we might start getting a new version of the OS every year, but that is not something that we can confirm at the time of writing.

Wear OS 5 is still in the Developer Preview phase, but starting today, you can access it via Android Studio and test everything new that Google has added to the latest version if you want to try it out.
