Android 8.1 Developer Preview 2 With ‘Near-Final System Images’ Out For Pixel & Nexus Devices

After rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo stable versions to Pixel and Nexus devices, Google has now released the factory images for Android 8.1 Developer Preview 2. The “Near-final system images for final testing” have been released for the Pixel and Nexus devices. The public launch of the update is just a month away now. The new factory images are on build number OPP6.171019.012 and are compatible with these devices –  Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X.

Enrol in Android Beta Program for OTA update

For the users with any of the aforementioned devices, it is not necessary to sideload the updates (especially when you are new to the sideloading process), you can get Android 8.1 preview by signing up for Google’s Android Beta Program. After signing up for the program, you will have to wait for around two days to receive the OTA update.

The latest Android 8.1 Oreo Developer Preview 2 and API level 27 comes with a slew of new features for developers. These new APIs also include Neural networks API that enables hardware acceleration of on-device machine learning. The Developer Preview 2 explicitly activates the Pixel Visual Core, which was missing from Android 8.1 Developer Preview 1.

Android 8.1 also brings some changes to the notification behaviour along with a new WallpaperColors API, and Programmatic Safe Browsing actions. For devices with low-end hardware specs, it brings Shared memory API while Android Wear also gets new features for enhanced functioning.

Pixel and Nexus users who are already enrolled in the Android Beta Program, they will soon get an update notification. The Factory images for Android 8.1 build OPP6.171019.012 can be flashed right away, so if you have any of the compatible devices and are also experienced with the sideloading process, go ahead and download them. For now, Google has only released factory images for the DP2, we will be updating this article when the OTA files go live.
