So, in case you haven’t been keeping an eye on the calendar, fair warning – tomorrow is April Fools' Day. In fact, it’s already April 1 in some parts of the world, including Japan, so some pranks are already launching. At this point, it’s fair to say most gamers are pretty over April Fools', particularly a specific type of gag publishers like to pull where they tease something wacky people actually get excited for, then yank it away with a “Haw haw, you got excited for this legitimately fun idea! Dummies!” Sometimes these ideas eventually become reality, but it’s still annoying. Well, thankfully, Sega isn’t doing that with The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Wait, what? The Murder of  Sonic the Hedgehog? Yes, Sega has released a mystery visual novel in which Tails must solve the murder of Sonic. Yes, it’s real – it’s got its own Steam page and everything, and best of all, it’s free! You can check out a quick trailer for The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, which actually looks pretty legit, below.

Okay everybody else, just pack in those April Fools' plans, you’re probably not beating Sega this year. Need to know more about the free game? Here’s a quick description…

“It's Amy Rose's birthday, and she's hosting a murder mystery party on the Mirage Express! When Sonic the Hedgehog becomes the game's victim, everyone is off to get to the bottom of things. However, something feels a bit off - is this really an innocent game or is something more sinister afoot? Join the colorful cast of the Sonic the Hedgehog series in an exciting new adventure!”

  • New & familiar faces - Interrogate some of your favorite characters as you figure out what happened to Sonic. Play as a new character who is starting their first day working on the Mirage Express, and meet the kind Conductor who is finally retiring from his long run with the train!
  • All aboard! - Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the Mirage Express, featuring fully hand-drawn landscapes and characters.

Sega hasn’t mentioned whether The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog will be left up or a limited-time thing, but maybe grab it while you can. Oh, and who do you think did it? My money’s on that scumbag Charmy the Bee.
