Review summary

The Quarry is yet another impressive title by Supermassive Games. While it doesn't veer away from their previous titles, their ability to write an interesting story with compelling characters is only improving. Featuring several red herrings and twists, The Quarry will keep you guessing and gives you an ever-increasing impact on how the story turns out. There are still a few niggles here and there, such as the sloth-like character movement and a few facial animation and audio quirks, but this looks better than ever and features an excellent soundtrack. If you're a fan of Until Dawn or The Dark Pictures games, you'll like this; particularly as the larger budget comes with a much bigger cast and a much larger and more branching story.

British developer Supermassive Games was first rumored to be working on a new project called The Quarry in late February when the game's trademark and its publishing deal with 2K games came to light.

The official announcement eventually landed on March 17th, revealing that The Quarry is Supermassive's spiritual successor to the acclaimed PlayStation 4 exclusive Until Dawn.

Release date and platforms

The Quarry will be an oddity for triple-A games when it launches, having had less than three months between the announcement date and the release date. The game will be available starting June 10th on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X.

Gameplay and trailers

The announcement trailer dropped alongside the game's reveal.

The first gameplay trailer, featuring the initial thirty minutes, was released on April 8th. Due to age restrictions, it's only available on YouTube.

Genre, setting, length, and mechanics

As mentioned above, The Quarry is an interactive survival horror drama following in the solid footsteps traced by Until Dawn, with additional influences from movies like Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Deliverance, and The Hills Have Eyes.

Players will take control of nine characters as they attempt to survive the night at the titular Hacket Quarry summer camp, hunted by crazed locals drenched in blood and even by something described as far more sinister.

Like Until Dawn, the game features a fully branching plot where players' actions determine the fate of the characters and their relationships. According to Supermassive, each character can die in about a dozen different ways. This also affects the length of The Quarry, as the premature death of some characters can shorten playthroughs to around 7 hours, while the average is expected to be roughly 10 hours.

The death of a playable character can be averted with the Death Rewind mechanic. Ordinarily, this is unlocked after the first playthrough of The Quarry, but the Deluxe Edition includes it right away. The player gets to reverse a character's untimely demise up to three times in a playthrough.

There'll be adjustable difficulty settings for all gameplay elements and even a brand new option to play the game just like a movie, minimizing the inputs needed. The idea is to cater to non-gamers and streaming audiences, as Game Director Will Byles revealed in late March.

The idea is that gamers and non-gamers can enjoy The Quarry. You can play, or your grandparents can play, and by turning all of the extra settings off, you've ultimately got a movie. And then you can then decide what sort of movie you want it to be: you can make a happy ending movie, you can make it a really bleak ending movie, and you can choose my own favourite, which is the gore fest movie. That goes down a fairly dark path.

You can also go into the characters and map out their characteristics: this person's fairly grumpy, they're argumentative, and they're clumsy, they're this and they're that. Then you just hit play and see how it plays out. There's a whole lot of stuff like that, a lot of which leads into where streamers are concerned. We're going to add some DLC later in the cycle too that will, again, allow streamers to tailor their games for their audiences.

The Quarry includes multiplayer options, too. There's a local co-op experience where each player takes turns to control different characters and an online mode where up to seven invited players (who only need to download the free demo) can watch along and vote on crucial decisions.
