There are two developer previews for Android 8.1. The one released today is a beta version with final API, the second preview will come out in November alongside the final system images. The final version for the Android 8.1. will release in December to AOSP and OEM. This version brings Pixel Visual Core features for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphone along with a slew of new features, bringing it to API level 27. Additionally, there is a new Neural networks API for hardware to bring support for on-device machine learning.
WallpaperColors API and Safe Browsing
The Android 8.1 Developer Preview brings some changes to the notification channels that limit apps to single notification alert per second. There is also a new WallpaperColors API, which allows apps to control wallpaper colours. The Programmatic Safe Browsing actions on this version will enable detection when a WebView tries to redirect users to a website that has been flagged as a threat by Safe Browsing. Now, apps can also decide whether to report malicious attacks to Google and even perform new actions.
Shared Memory API
Targeted at Android Go, two new hardware-feature compulsions enable developers on Android 8.1 to allow their apps to run smoothly on low-end Android devices. The Shared memory API on this preview allow developers on Android 8.1 to “create, map, and manage anonymous shared memory that can be used by multiple processes or apps.”
The final changes bring an update to the EditText method, which is a newly added video thumbnail extractor and fingerprint updates that include new error codes. The version consists of new developer features aimed at Android Wear that also brings a new AmbientMode class that allows apps to remain “visible in low-power ambient mode for the duration of a session.” Google has also offered a new method to include AmbientMode for developers.
Nexus and Pixel owners who are already enrolled in the Android Beta Program, they will receive an update notification.
