Apple is years late in the foldable market, as competitors like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei have perfected their devices to better compete against any newcomer that might come. However, Apple's loyal fan base will definitely stick to the iPhone instead of any other smartphone, which gives the company a bit of an edge. The iPhone Fold is expected to be released in the latter half of next year, and a prominent analyst has now speculated that the second generation of the foldable will be released in 2027.
The iPhone Fold 2 is expected to address issues from the first generation, offering improvements in design and functionality for a better user experience
The first generation of a product always has room to improve and evolve, as it has never been out and about in the market, and the customer response could be different than what the company originally perceived. This gives the company more room to improve in the direction that customers desire. Moreover, in terms of the hardware, the company can always improve the build quality, and in the case of a foldable, the display is also a crucial aspect with its crease that demands consistent upgrades.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared his predictions for 2025 to 2027 iPhone upgrades and the timeline for each device, including the iPhone 17e, which is slated to arrive next year in the spring. Moreover, the analyst also claims that the iPhone 18 lineup will see a spaced-out launch staggered months apart, possibly for better management and cost-effectiveness. The first foldable iPhone will launch next year in September, followed by a second-generation model expected in the second half of 2027. The iPhone 19 lineup and the second-generation foldable iPhone will launch on the device's 20th anniversary, and we are expecting major changes for the 'Pro' models.
This is not the first time we have heard details about the second generation of the foldable iPhone. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg previously claimed that Apple will launch a "bold" new iPhone Pro in 2027 alongside a new foldable device, which we suspect is the iPhone. The Pro iPhone would be the highlight of the upgrade, as it will mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, featuring an all-screen design similar to what the company did with the iPhone X.
The second generation of Apple's foldable iPhone could improve the hinge mechanism and possibly the display crease as well, refining the overall look of the device and enhancing its durability. It remains to be seen how Apple would market it against the iPhone Pro models and if it would launch with a dedicated software experience or an extension of iOS. The company is also aiming to launch the iPhone 19 Air with a larger screen, so do check that out as well.
