The first benchmarks of AMD's Ryzen 7 8700G, the flagship Hawk Point" AM5 Desktop APU, have been leaked within Geekbench.

The AMD Ryzen 7 8700G is going to be part of the Ryzen 8000G "Hawk Point" APU family which is designed for the AM5 Desktop platform. These will be the first APU family for the new AM5 socket and support the latest features such as DDR5 & PCIe 5.0. Expected to launch next year, more and more motherboard makers are now testing these chips which they had acquired in November as samples for evaluation purposes.

We have seen the APUs getting support for upcoming 64 GB DDR5 modules for up to 256 GB DRAM capacities but now, we have a more interesting set of benchmarks. Starting with the specifications, we are looking at the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G APU which features 8 cores, 16 threads, 16 MB of L3, and 8 MB of L2 cache. This chip has a base clock rated at 4.20 GHz and boosts up to 5.10 GHz. The iGPU includes the RDNA 3-based Radeon 780M with 12 Compute Units clocked around 3.0 GHz.

In terms of performance, we are looking at Geekbench's ML tests which evaluate the AI capabilities of chips. For the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G, we have a maximum score of 3933 points in the ONNX CPU inference tests and 5255 points in the ONNX DirectML Inference score. The CPU side takes full use of the CPU but it is unknown if the Ryzen AI "XDNA" NPU was utilized here. The results do look just slightly better than the Ryzen 9 7940HS. We know that Hawk Point APUs feature an upgraded NPU that offers 16 TOPS versus the 10 TOPS on the Phoenix Point APUs.

The second result (DirectML) utilizes the GPU and here we are looking at pretty much the same performance with the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G coming out ahead by a little bit. We also added the ML performance tests for the Intel Core Utra 7 155H which offers CPU inference scores of up to 3243 points and GPU inference scores of up to 4408 using the Arc Xe-LPG GPU. The AMD Ryzen 7 8700G APU being a desktop chip sits ahead of its laptop counterparts so the performance difference is to be expected. We expect to see more CPU and GPU-oriented tests related to the AMD Ryzen 8000G AM5 Desktop APU family in the coming months as we approach the launch in February 2024.
