AMD's 5th Gen EPYC "Turin" CPUs are heading for launch next month and it looks like several samples are already doing the rounds online.
AMD 5th Gen EPYC "Turin" 9655 96-Core & 9535 64-Core CPU Samples Spotted Ahead of Launch
AMD & Intel are all set for a heated battle in the server segment with the launch of their next-gen lineups. Intel has already launched its Xeon 6900P "Granite Rapids" family with up to 128 cores & AMD is going to do the same next month with the launch of its 5th Gen EPYC family, codenamed Turin.
We have already seen a few EPYC "Turin" samples previously but it looks like more and more retail chips are making their way into the hands of testers ahead of launch. A blog post at s-ss.cc reveals that the EPYC 9655, a 96-Core chip, has already arrived and it looks like the person who got this chip will also soon be getting the flagship EPYC 9755 "Turin" CPU with 128 cores based on the Zen 5 architecture.
Looking at the pictures, the AMD EPYC 9655 "Turin" CPU features an orange carrier which is very common on the Threadripper lineup. The CPU has the "100-000000674" OPN and is compatible with the SP5 socket. This chip features 96 cores, 192 threads, a base clock of 2.6 GHz, a boost of up to 5.2 GHz, and a TDP of 400W. The tester is currently waiting for the proper BIOS microcode patch before he tests the chip.
The good thing is that 5th Gen EPYC CPUs are pin-compatible with existing SP5 platforms so all you need is a BIOS firmware and you're good to go. The EPYC 9755 will get 128 cores, and 256 threads and feature a TDP of up to 500W. Do note that both chips are based on the Zen 5 classic cores whereas the denser Zen 5C SKUs will arrive later, most probably early next year, and will compete with Xeon 6900E "288 Core" chips.
In another leak, the AMD EPYC 100-000001247-12 CPU has been listed over at eBay. This chip is a 64-core part with a 3.0 GHz ES clock and the OPN ID matches with the EPYC 9535 CPU. The chip is seen with a light blue carrier frame which might have been used in the ES parts.
What's interesting is that the chip has been listed for $2699.99 US which seems about right considering the 9950X, a 16-core part, retails for $649 US and this being 4x the core count has a price almost 4x that of 9950X's MSRP. With that said, this isn't official pricing and we suggest users interested in EPYC chips wait for AMD's official announcement which is scheduled for 10th October so not a long way to go till then.
