An honest opinion by well-established technology YouTubers can give a boatload of advice to companies to help improve their products for next year’s release, but it appears that Mrwhosetheboss’ take of last year’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro rubbed Google the wrong way. As a result, the content creator did not receive a Pixel 9 invite, nor has he yet to receive any review unit from the advertising giant. Cementing yourself as an impartial source of information for millions of viewers can have drawbacks, it appears.
In a post on X, the YouTuber says that he stands by his original criticism of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, and it should not be the reason why he did not receive a Pixel 9 invite
Arun Maini, better known as Mrwhosetheboss on YouTube, has amassed a loyal following and has accumulated views in the billions for his diversified smartphone reviews. Naturally, anyone who has subscribed to his channel would be wondering why he has yet to publish a first impressions video of the Pixel 9 series, whereas creators like MKBHD, Dave2D, and others have uploaded theirs. It turns out that Google and its team may not have been happy about Mrwhosetheboss’ honest verdict of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro video from 2023 below.
The 22-minute-long review talks about various positives, but Arun did not shy away from criticizing the two flagships. The first area he took a jab at was generative AI, stating that the features Google introduced last year were not as seamless as the company had marketed. The Mountain View company also did not mention during its on-stage presentation that the Pixel 8 lineup’s AI features are cloud-based, meaning that an active internet connection is required at all times to take advantage of them.
For those of you asking for our Google Pixel review...
We didn't get an invite to the Google Pixel event this year. Reached out to multiple different Google contacts and not heard anything back
We were critical of the last-gen Pixel devices, but that
shouldn't be a reason to…— Arun Maini (@Mrwhosetheboss) August 15, 2024
Keep in mind that the demos Google showcased last year were not live, and the fact that the company changed that approach to demonstrate live ones at the Pixel 9 event shows that they are open to feedback. However, a live demo has a higher chance of something going incredibly wrong, which we reported about during the Pixel 9 event, where it took Gemini Advanced three attempts to generate a single result instead of one. Mrwhosetheboss has not backtracked from his Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro review, nor has he de-listed the clip, suggesting that he stands by his original verdict.
Even if Google does not provide its review units, the YouTuber can purchase every Pixel 9 model and provide a lengthy review of what he thinks of the new handsets. Hopefully, we will get to see something in the coming days.
