In Eastern markets, the race to make screens cover the maximum amount of body area is in full swing. Manufacturers including Vivo and Oppo have launched several devices with unique ideas to achieve this goal. We've seen sliding camera setups, pop-up sensors, and 'teardrop' designs; each of which carries its own approach to the manner.
However, while the aforementioned manufacturers aren't well recognized in the West, Xiaomi is a tad bit better known. The company's planning a flagship smartphone for the year's second half, as an upgrade for its Mi Mix lineup, which started off this entire bezel-free display trend. Now, we've got a leak for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, straight off of the factory lines. Take a look below for more details.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 Leaks During Testing, Corroborating Earlier Leaks And Displaying A Completely Bezel Free Design
In addition to being the one having set off the current edge-to-edge display trend, Xiaomi's Mi Mix lineup also has another unique feature. It's one of the few smartphones in the world to be designed by a relatively well-known industrial designer, and the result is visible. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s has a sleek and elegant form, which when combined with the smartphone's bottom front camera gives the gadget an unorthodox yet amazing look.
Speaking of which, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will make a major design change that will take away the lineup's iconic front camera placement. The device is a part of several leaks throughout the course of this year and all of these have pointed to a near chin-free bottom. This naturally raised the question of where the gadget's front camera sensor will be placed, if not at the bottom.
This mystery was cleared up by none other than Xiaomi's president Mr. LinBin. He posted an image of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 on his Weibo, the authenticity of which was then confirmed by Xiaomi's CEO Mr. Lei Jun. Now, we've got a fresh Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 leak straight off of the factory line that provides two critical details for the smartphone.
Xiaomi's Mi Mix 3 Appears In Final Stages Of Development As An Alleged Image Shows Smartphone Running 5G
Well, let's get down to it. Given that today's leak is authentic, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is in the final stages of its development. According to its source, the smartphone is undergoing testing right now - a fact that's also discernible from the software running on the screen in the background. This is good news and falls in line perfectly with earlier reports that the Xiaomi might launch the smartphone on the 15th of this month.
However, this fact isn't the main selling point of today's image. Instead, it's the fact that if you look closely at the top right corner, the smartphone appears to have connected to 5G. This in itself is interesting because the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 does not support 5G. Additionally, neither will the Snapdragon 855 on its own due to the X50 modem's large size.
Which, leads us to two conclusions. Either the image above is fake or Xiaomi's included similar support for the X50 on the Mix 3 as present on Motorola's Z3. Introducing 5G on the Mix 3 will prove to be a strong point, but of course, the feature's relevance depends on whether an adequate number of carriers will support it. Thoughts?
