Out of the blue, Novato-based game developer Toys for Bob announced it is going indie, splitting from Activision and Microsoft. The brief announcement message says this is a move to 'return to roots' and be a nimble studio once again.
However, those looking for any kind of controversy against its former owners are out of luck. Toys for Bob said Activision and Microsoft have been 'extremely supportive' of the change. Moreover, they said they are still exploring a partnership with Microsoft. That means we may still get new Crash and Spyro games, which Toys for Bob has been making recently aside from their contribution to the Call of Duty franchise. The latter work appears likely to cease, however, and it might have been what prompted them to go independent in the first place.
Don't expect to find out what the studio is making any time soon. The message said development on the new project is still early and any announcement would be 'a ways away'.
Last year, Toys for Bob released the 4v4 multiplayer game Crash Team Rumble. However, the game failed to get any major popularity.
