According to a new report published by DualShockers, Creative Assembly is working on a Total War: Star Wars game. The sources actually mention this is one of three Total War projects and they do not know exactly when each game will be released.

However, the report was later confirmed by Tom Henderson, who said he first heard about a 'futuristic' Total War game in late 2022. Moreover, several 'second-hand sources' have since told him this is indeed set in the Star Wars universe.

This is the second licensed IP picked by Creative Assembly for his once-historical-only franchise. The Warhammer trilogy turned out to be extremely successful for the studio, though, which is probably why it chose to try again with another extremely popular sci-fi IP.

This won't be the first real-time strategy game set in the universe imagined by George Lucas. The first one, Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, was developed internally at LucasArts and released in 2001 to fairly positive reviews. Five years later, Petroglyph Games released Star Wars: Empire at War; it was their first game, and they would go on to make many acclaimed RTS games, such as 2019's Conan Unconquered, 2020's Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, and 2023's The Great War: Western Front.

There's also been a very active Star Wars modding scene for Total War games, the most prominent of which is certainly the Star Wars Total War mod for Rome: Total War. It will be interesting to see Creative Assembly tackling the problem of space battles in the upcoming game.

Meanwhile, the studio (which received several cuts from parent company SEGA following the cancellation of Hyenas) is also working on a big free update for Total War: Pharaoh. According to Creative Assembly, fans can expect significant new additions to the campaign that will increase its size.
