The road to launch for Star Wars: Eclipse is still very much uphill, according to new rumors. Speaking on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast (Ep. 64), Mike Straw mentioned that the game is still in development hell, and French developer Quantic Dream may soon be sold by NetEase.

Mike Straw: I can tell you one game not to expect. Star Wars Eclipse. I wouldn't expect to see that at all. It is in development hell. Yeah, it ain't going well. NetEase, they want to divest from Quantic Dream. I'm not going to be surprised if Quantic Dream was sold by the end of the year or announced, like, hey, we're selling or whatever, by the end of the year or sometime in 2027. It's not going well. Like, it is not going well at all. And there's frustration. There's a lot of frustration about it. So I would not expect that.

Tom Henderson: I said it like three or four years ago that that game was in hell, and it just hasn't improved.

Mike Straw: Yeah. And then I've been getting stuff, like I'd reported on it earlier this year... Quantic Dream was riding on a game that no one knew existed to fund more of Star Wars: Eclipse and that game, Spellcasters Chronicles, even that now that's being ceased.

Star Wars: Eclipse was announced at The Game Awards 2021, but it quickly became clear that it would have a very long road ahead. In March 2022, Henderson, as he recalled in the new podcast, revealed that the project wouldn't launch before 2027 or 2028. Based on the new rumor, 2028 or even later look more likely.

Later that year, NetEase confirmed its intention to acquire Quantic Dream, which it completed in early 2023 for around €100 million. Clearly, this had to be a project that NetEase believed in at first. However, as the years passed, NetEase started divesting from various companies they had invested in, while the development of Star Wars: Eclipse continued to drag.

In October 2025, Quantic Dream announced a F2P 3v3 MOBA called Spellcasters Chronicles. It seems like they intended this game to help with funding Eclipse, but the game fizzled in the span of a few months of its early access debut. Now, things are looking pretty dire.

Eclipse is supposed to be the first action/adventure game made by the studio, featuring a branching narrative that spanned multiple characters across the galaxy.
