Although The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched back in 2015, the game has continued to enjoy great popularity thanks to the quality of its story and characters and the post-launch support offered by CD Projekt Red, which culminated with the launch of the next-gen version introducing new features and improvements to the final chapter of Geralt of Rivia's story.
The love the modding community is pouring into the game - releasing mods that significantly improve the experience with enhanced visuals, such as the HD Reworked Project, whose new version is set to launch this year, along with new features - is also behind its enduring popularity. The first new feature this community added to the game this year is something unexpected that is sure to bring more than a few players to the Continent: a multiplayer mode.
Developed by rejuvenate, The Witcher Online adds a new multiplayer mode which allows users to experience the world of the game together with others by connecting to dedicated servers all while supporting other mods, such as Custom Player Characters, and Chill Out for enhanced role-playing, giving the game a sort of MMO feel, though in a minimal scope.
Besides supporting these other mods, The Witcher Online features equipment sync thanks to which each players will be able to see their their equipped armor, swords, crossbow, scabbards, hair style, and face mark, full movement and combat sync corresponding to Geralt's animations, emotes that other players can see using corresponding emote commands in the console, statuses display and more.
Although the mod isn't perfect in its current release, available from Nexus Mods, as it has issues in boss fights and more, the community is obviously excited about this great development, which was unexpected, especially 10 years after the game's release.
"The Witcher if Kaer Morhen wasn't attacked and destroyed," commented MrTimPL on YouTube, celebrating this release with a reference to a central event in the universe's lore which had a considerable impact on the witchers living in the ancient fortress deep in the mountains of the kingdom of Kaedwen.
The Witcher 3 getting a multiplayer mode is reportedly only one of the surprises this 2026 has in store for fans of the third entry in the series by CD Projekt Red. Last month, we heard that a new expansion may be released later this year, and other reliable insiders have corroborated this in early 2026, to give fans of the series something new ahead of the release of The Witcher IV, and to kickstart the marketing campaign for what promises to be another massive role-playing game.
