State of Decay 3 launches in 2027 (also on PS5), breaking Xbox exclusivity and expanding the series with a map 4X larger than its predecessor.

Today, Undead Labs shared the first proper gameplay reveal of State of Decay 3 during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. The studio presented the new installment as the next major evolution of their zombie-survival series, built to feel bigger, deeper, and more systemic than earlier games. The scale has been increased: larger maps, more player freedom, more settlement management, and a stronger emphasis on shared-world play.

The game keeps the franchise's post-apocalyptic survival identity, but pushes it into a more connected sandbox where players build communities, explore dangerous regions, and make long-term decisions about where and how they survive. You are not just scavenging for yourself; you are managing settlements, supporting survivors, and shaping the survival of a larger group. Unlike previous State of Decay games, the world is designed so co-op players can either stick together or split up and pursue different goals while still remaining part of the same shared experience. Players can build up to three settlements, and NPC enclaves remain an important part of the ecosystem because they can become allies and expand their network of support.

Going back to the map, Undead Labs claims it is substantially larger than before, roughly four times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map. It's part of a broader push toward a more open-ended, reactive survival world, where players can decide whether to push deep into dangerous territory for better rewards or play it safer, closer to their bases. Exploration is also tied to environmental storytelling and resource hunting, so the world itself seems intended to be a source of both narrative flavor and mechanical pressure.

One of the game's most important additions is Plague Nests, a more dynamic evolution of the plague threat first seen through Plague Hearts in State of Decay 2. These nests are meant to make the zombie threat feel less static and more responsive, so the danger in the world can shift depending on what players do and where they go.

Combat has been expanded with more direct melee options, including quick and power attacks, as well as zombies that behave in more varied ways than before. When it comes to weapons, the improvised, modified gear reflects the setting and survival tone. That includes items like serrated blades and rebar-modified weapons, meant to feel practical, ugly, and homemade rather than sleek or heroic.

State of Decay 3 is being built in Unreal Engine 5, and Undead Labs is aiming for a noticeably higher visual standard than previous entries (as suggested by previous rumors of a proper "AAA feel"). The developers wish to keep the gritty survival feel, but present it with more fidelity, atmosphere, and scale.

Following the first Alpha tests, State of Decay 3 is targeting a 2027 release. It will launch on Xbox Series S|X, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam, PlayStation 5 (a franchise first), and Game Pass, with Xbox Play Anywhere support also listed. More playtest waves are planned throughout the year.
