Square Enix Developing New IPs; Reboots Existing Ones

Square Enix released the transcript of its financial results briefing today, outlining the plan for fiscal year 2016. CEO Yosuke Matsuda explained the company's IP policies, stating that the company plans to strengthen and reboot existing IPs.

First is to strengthen and reboot our existing IPs. We would like to focus on how to utilize the numerous assets of content that we have nurtured so far, and apply them to the latest trend. As for the platform, we would like to use consoles and smart devices in parallel. Just focusing on one platform is not enough. We believe it is significant to serve both platforms, if we are to offer game content and services that appeal to the new generation.

Matsuda mentions that they are already working on new IPs, and will continue work throughout the fiscal year.

The second policy is to create new IPs. I cannot disclose much at this moment, but we are working on various initiatives, including some experimental projects.
So far, we have created IPs for a wide range of platforms, including consoles, smart devices, PCs and publication. Based on this strength, we will actively work on creating new IPs in FY2016/3.

Collaboration with partner companies ensures that the company's large IP portfolio carries on.

The third IP policy is to collaborate with partner companies. With so much changes going on in the market, we will suffer a big opportunity loss if we try to do everything all by ourselves. Through collaboration, we will utilize the strengths of other companies which we ourselves lack, and grow the size of the business. A good example is “DRAGON QUEST HEROES,” So far, we had not worked on a full-scale action RPG. However, we were able to create a new style for “DRAGON QUEST” through collaboration with Koei Tecmo Games.

It would be quite interesting to see what new Square Enix has in store, and hopefully we could find out more at E3 2015 next month. Square Enix will be holding their first press conference at the event, so undoubtedly, there will be some exciting announcements and demonstrations from the company.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, which was introduced with a magnificent cinematic trailer, had very little information revealed about it so far, and a complete lack of gameplay footage. Kingdom Hearts 3, similarly made no appearances for some time, and after the transition of the game to the Unreal Engine 4, fans have been eager to see Kingdom Hearts in action. Final Fantasy XV will surely make the show, as will the hugely anticipated Just Cause 3.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is another huge title coming from Square Enix, but it is certain that Microsoft will have the title showcased in their own press conference, as it is one of their biggest exclusives of the year. It is quite possible that Square Enix will have a few surprise announcements as well, so we are certainly in for a treat, as E3 2015 is shaping up to be one very incredibly exciting event with many announcements coming from both Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo is returning to host a press conference after being absent for some time. Both Bethesda and Square Enix are holding their first press conferences, and Ubisoft will surely have a ton of great announcements as usual, as well as demonstrations of Assassin's Creed Syndicate, The Division, and Rainbow Six Siege.

We will bring you any new information on Square Enix, Deus Ex and other projects, as well as any news about E3 2015 as soon as it becomes available. Be sure to check out our Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Just Cause 3 coverage for more information on the titles.
