Samsung's planned initial production runs for its upcoming devices are leading to aberrant outcomes this year, with the South Korean giant planning to produce a lot more Galaxy Z Fold 8 units than the cheaper Galaxy Z Flip 8 ones, while going all-in on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, to the detriment of its base and plus counterparts.
Samsung to produce 3.5 million units of the Galaxy Fold 8 vs. just 2.5-3 million units of the Galaxy Z Flip 8
According to ET News, Samsung is planning to produce 3.5 million units of the Galaxy Fold 8 and between 2.5 million and 3 million units of the Galaxy Z Flip 8 ahead of their planned launch in H2 2026. Critically, this is the first time that foldable units will exceed their flip counterparts in the South Korean tech giant's yearly production cadence.
Do note that the Flip phones are generally priced around 1 million won ($691) lower than the Fold phones in South Korea. Even so, Samsung is basing its new production cadence on last year's sales figures, where for the first time ever the Z Fold devices exceeded the sales volume of the Z Flip devices.
Until last year, the Z Flip devices made up around 60 to 70 percent of the sales volume of Samsung's foldables in a given year. This sales mix, however, changed in 2025 with the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which weighed less than the Galaxy S25 Ultra and bore a thickness of just 8.9mm.
Of course, Samsung has just priced its Galaxy Z TriFold at an eye-watering $2,899 in the US. Clearly, the South Korean behemoth believes pricing does not play a make-or-break role for the cohort buying its foldable devices.
Finally, we note that these figures do not account for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 FE that might or might not debut this year.
