Samsung DeX Pad for Galaxy S9 Is Coming to the U.S. – Features, Pricing & Everything Else You Want to Know
The announcement of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ also introduced the DeX Pad, which is a new accessory designed to improve the productivity of the user by attaching any one of Samsung’s latest 2018 flagships. The accessory is now available to pre-order in the U.S. and we will be walking you through the specifications of the latest product and how it can be used to improve the way you work while it functions in unison with either the Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+.
DeX Pad Will Allow You to Use the Galaxy S9 as a Trackpad for Additional Productivity
A lot of design changes took place with the DeX Pad, with one of the most prominent changes being the fact that the Galaxy S9 now lies flat on the accessory. This will help the user to use the smartphone as a trackpad. More accurately, you will need to use the touchscreen as a trackpad, and if that does not seem like a comfortable approach, you can always hook up a mouse to the accessory via the USB cable.
The new DeX Pad can also handle resolutions up to 2560 x 1440, but your monitor’s native resolution also needs to be able to crunch the aforementioned number of pixels. If that is not possible, then you can always scale down to 1920 x 1080 pixels and still get a lot of work done.
The interface is similar to Microsoft Windows and a lot of applications, particularly the office-centered ones will be more responsive to the change in canvas size when you hook up an external display to the DeX Pad. Other applications are going to be optimized for it, so there are going to be a significant number of improvements incorporated here.
You can view multiple applications at the same time and what is even better about the DeX interface is that the phone’s notifications, messages, and calls can all be managed through this interface. If you want to listen to media, the way the Galaxy S9 is placed on the pad also presents you access to the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Is the Samsung DeX Pad Compatible With Previous-Generation Flagship Smartphones?
Fortunately for you guys, it is. The DeX Pad is compatible with the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S8 Active, and the Galaxy Note 8. However, before you get excited, please note that all the four previous-generation devices must be updated to Android Oreo 8.0 in order for them to be compatible. In addition, if you use any of these devices and attach an HDMI cable to the display, the maximum supported resolution is still going to be 1440p instead of 1080p but once again, that will depend on your monitor.
DeX Pad Connectivity Options
As for connectivity, there’s a USB-C for powering the docking station and the phone within it, along with two USB 2.0 Type-A ports, and an HDMI port. We were hoping to see USB 3.0 ports for faster data transfers but it is possible that we’ll be seeing this change in the successor. There is also a Type-C USB Fast Charge power supply present in the box.
DeX Pad Pricing & Availability
Sales of the Samsung DeX Pad will start from May 13 in the U.S. and it carries a price of $99.99. You can pre-order it from Samsung’s website from today onwards. Now here is the good part, if you still haven’t upgraded to the Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+, the company is bundling the DeX Pad for a limited period if you buy the smartphone from it directly.
