ZOTAC GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER AMP Extreme – The High-End GeForce Turing Graphics Card Gets AMPed
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 features the full TU104 GPU core which comprises of 3072 CUDA cores. NVIDIA’s 12nm FinFET architecture allows higher core count while retaining faster clock speeds which we have already seen on Pascal cards. The chip houses 13.6 Billion transistors which are a nice jump compared to the 7.2 billion transistors on the Pascal GP104 GPU. The card delivers much higher performance due to enhanced core design that adds incremental IPC gains.
The actual clock speeds are maintained at an increased 1650 MHz base and 1875 MHz boost. The chip features 8 GB of GDDR6 (next-gen) memory featured across a 256-bit bus and clocked at a blistering 15.5 GB/s. This leads to a total bandwidth of 496.1 GB/s. Coupled with a very smooth power delivery system to avoid leakage, the chip is one of the most efficient GPU architecture ever designed for gamers. The display outputs for the card include 3 Display Port 1.4 (4K @ 120 Hz), 1 HDMI 2.0b (4K @ 60 Hz) and USB Type-C connector for the Virtual link which means that it is capable to support all next-gen displays with new standards. Power is fed through dual 8 pin connector configuration.
The ZOTAC Gaming GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Amp Extreme certainly leaves the Founders Edition everything behind with 100% custom designed PCB with a 16+4 Phase Power Delivery underneath a memory and power delivery heatsink/baseplate topped off by a thick 3-slot 3-fan cooler adorned with addressable RGB accents. The backplate has a wrap around the side feature that not only protects the heatsink fins from being damaged while handling but also helps support the card to reduce sag, which is integral to a card this size that comes in a 12.5" long and 4.75" wide.
The addressable RGB all along the cover, side, and rear of the card are well diffused leaving the color shift soft and smooth as it rotates around. Normally I'm not fussed with RGB but this was pretty impressive if you really enjoy having a light show in your case. It's really bright making it fairly difficult to photograph without looking washed out.
Overclocking results
While I'm sure people could guess the overclocking results using just some simple math we wanted to see how overclocking this overbuilt fully custom and fully unlocked TU104 based card went. Stock curve we found the card sitting just ahead of the Founders Edition by just a small margin and that was a bit disappointing. We set a custom fan curve in the images below then went full bore on the power limit and were only able to go +50 on the GPU core, but that shifted the average clock up from 1920MHz to 2080MHz under sustained load on the core. The memory was the really interesting part to this overclock. The memory overclock had no issue taking an additional +1000MHz on the already blistering fast memory, resulting in an incredible 17.5Gbps and a memory bandwidth of 560.1GB/s. The results throughout the review for overclocked numbers will be using these settings.
