Asobo hints Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is nearly ready to launch, sharing new Sophia story details after almost a year of silence.

It's been almost a year since Studio Asobo and Focus Home revealed Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, the third game in the peculiar action/adventure series.

After a long silence, the French studio has shared a lot of info about this prequel, including its development status, in a fresh devblog. There's good news on that front, as Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is in the final production phase with the last recording sessions and the final notes of the score wrapping up. The blog post teases that "the release is almost here", suggesting it will be released this year, possibly ahead of the behemoth called Grand Theft Auto VI (which is still scheduled for November 19). For the record, the previous game, A Plague Tale: Requiem, launched on October 18, 2022.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is set 15 years before the events seen in Requiem and takes place elsewhere, too: in the Mediterranean Sea, specifically on Minotaur's Island, a location said to conceal a secret treasure. The game shifts between two timelines via a mechanic called "Echoes": 14th-century medieval Greece and ancient Minoan civilization.

The protagonist, Sophia, is also partly new. She appeared as a companion in Requiem, but she'll be playable this time around, and she'll also spearhead the biggest change in the series: as a pirate smuggler, she has access to a full melee combat system with swords, daggers, and parries, whereas the previous protagonist, Amicia, used her sling as a ranged weapon.

The blog post dives into Sophia's different looks in this new game and also provides more context for her backstory. At a young age, she was placed in a convent by her mother's family, but escaped to her father, the leader of a pirate camp, where she was raised and trained to fight, eventually earning the nickname "The Scorpion of the Seas". The story shifts between her adult life and childhood flashbacks, exploring her motivations and the world she grew up in. Moreover, the Macula (the rat plague curse at the heart of the series) is directly linked to events on Minotaur's Island, and the devblog hints that Sophia herself may be affected by it, setting up deeply personal stakes for the story.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy also features complex puzzles that will require using a stolen Minoan sphere to solve by manipulating light, and there's something restless lurking in the shadows of the island that follows Sophia around, increasing tension.
