One of the perks of owning this device is that, on paper, the majority of the specifications remain unchanged from the more expensive Pixel 9 series, but there is one hardware difference that sets apart the Pixel 9a from the rest of the pack; it features the biggest battery capacity out of any smartphone launched by Google so far.

This is all made possible thanks to the 5,100mAh cell that is a part of the smartphone’s innards, with the mid-range offering now sporting a 13.5 percent higher capacity than its immediate predecessor, the Pixel 8a. This model also goes as far as to trump the Pixel 9 Pro XL, which previously held the crown of shipping with the largest battery at 5,060mAh.
As for how Google managed to make this possible, the company likely followed Apple’s footsteps by using all that internal space. With the iPhone 16e, there is only a single rear camera, allowing Apple to cram in a large 4,005mAh battery. With this approach, the iPhone 16e now rocks better endurance than any other iPhone that sports a 6.1-inch display. Since the Pixel 9a is thicker than both the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL at 8.9mm, not to mention features two rear cameras instead of three, Google took advantage of the ‘cut down’ hardware by incorporating an upgrade.
