iPhone Fold’s Complicated Design And Pricey Parts Could Force Apple To Limit The Launch To Just One Option, Claims New Leak

New iPhone Fold leak reveals the device could just be available in one option
This isn't surprising to hear, given that the iPhone Fold's arrival has been mired in complexities

Apple appears to be playing it safe with its upcoming iPhone Fold, as it should, because it’s the first time the technology giant will enter a market that its competitors have attempted to bend to their will for years without success. Seeing as it’s incredibly difficult to secure sufficient sales, not to mention the design complications and expensive parts that come with building a foldable smartphone, a new leak reveals that only one variant may be available.

New leak reveals that the iPhone Fold could only be available in the color white, as increased component costs and fewer shipments are becoming a barrier

With just 11 million units expected to be available for the initial shipment run, Sonny Dickson not only shows a dummy unit of the iPhone Fold, but also reveals that the device may only be available in the color white. Considering that Apple exclusively sells its in-ear AirPods in the finish, introducing just one paint job isn’t out of the ordinary, but not when it concerns iPhones.

The iPhone 18 series is expected to arrive in multiple colors, so early adopters will be livid that they cannot personalize their new iPhone Fold purchase with other products sporting the same color. For Apple, attaining a near-perfect design with a crease-less display and unique liquid metal hinge takes precedence over a multitude of colors, since the longevity of the iPhone Fold doesn’t depend on a paint job, but on what high-quality parts are incorporated.

Also, launching the device in just one white color means Apple won’t need to invest billions in prototyping how a different color holds up to a string of tests and long-term use, which is a whole new headache to deal with. Given that the anodized aluminum chassis of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max is susceptible to scuffs and scratches, a different color may not hold up well on the iPhone Fold, making the white option a generally accepted aesthetic.

Coming to the dummy unit, we see that the same passport-style form factor has been adopted, along with a dual rear camera configuration, with volume up and down buttons at the top. Due to design complications, it’s unlikely that the iPhone Fold will ship with Face ID, which is yet another omission that will disgruntle buyers. Fortunately, achieving impressive runtimes won’t be a problem for Apple’s first foldable flagship because it’s rumored to feature a 5,400-5,800mAh battery, so that’s something to look forward to.
