Windows 10 was initially quite a bulky operating system but over the years it has been trimmed down to be compatible with devices that contain less storage such as notebooks and other portable handhelds. But not only does Windows 10 consume less space now, but you can also save up more space on your C: drive via the compression feature as it compresses Windows 10 on your PC to make room for some more gigabytes under the hood.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind before you begin this journey. First off this would not wipe or erase any data but since you’re altering your system’s OS, it is strongly recommended to back up your system. Here’s how you can compress Windows 10 on your PC.

Entering the Compact OS state to compress Windows 10:

  1. Open the Start menu and type cmd in the search bar. Right-click on the Command Prompt app and Run as administrator.
  2. You need to check whether your system is already utilizing that feature or not. Simply type the command Compact.exe /CompactOS:query and press Enter.
  3. The system will now inform you whether the feature is active or not. As shown below, the system is not in its Compact state which means that it can be readily enabled.
    compress windows 10
  4. Now use the command Compact.exe /CompactOS:always and press Enter.
    compact os
  5. The system will now show the current status as it is working on compressing the OS binaries.
  6. Once the compression finishes up, you can see the results which include the number of files that were compressed including the compression ratio which is 1.8 to 1 in this case. This indicates that the compression was successful and now your OS is in the Compact state.

Reverting back from the Compact state:

For any reason, if you wish to exit the Compact OS state of Windows 10 and undo the changes, here’s how you can accomplish this task:

    1. To undo the Compact State, type in the command Compact.exe /CompactOS:never and press Enter.
      compact OS
    2. The system will commence uncompressing the files to revert the changes that you made and shift your OS back to the normal state.
    3. You will be informed once the changes have been successfully reverted back to their original state.
      compress windows 10

These instructions will compress Windows 10 on your PC and can help you free up some extra space to give your C: drive the breathing space it needs for apps or extra system files.
