tvOS 15 Beta Released for Developers, Download and Install it Today on Your Apple TV
Update: tvOS 15 beta 2 is now available for download.
You can learn about the new features in tvOS 15 by going here:
If you are a registered developer, you can go right ahead and take the new tvOS 15 beta for a spin on an Apple TV. It works on the older Apple TV HD, Apple TV 4K 1 and the newly released Apple TV 4K with the fancy Siri Remote.
Downloading the new beta is a slightly tricky process. First and foremost, you must have the latest Xcode beta installed onto your Mac. This process does not work on a Windows PC. And in order to get hold of the new Xcode beta, you must have access to the Apple Developer Program as well. We are assuming that you do while also assuming that you already have that set up. If yes, then read forward. Or, you can sign up by going to this link.
In order to perform a clean installation of the beta, you can simply plug in a USB-C cable to the back of your Apple TV and then install the IPSW using Finder. But, this applies to the Apple TV HD (1080p) model only.
Clean Install tvOS 15 Beta on Apple TV HD
Step 1. Connect the Apple TV HD to your Mac using a USB-C cable
Step 2. Download the tvOS 15 beta IPSW by going to the Apple Developer Program website and then Downloads
Step 3. Launch Finder and you should see your Apple TV HD appear as a tiny Apple TV icon in the left side bar. Click on it
Step 4. Assuming that you have already downloaded and saved the tvOS 15 beta IPSW on your desktop, hold down the left Option key on your keyboard and then click on Restore Apple TV
Step 5. Select the tvOS 15 beta IPSW file and let Finder extract it and restore it onto your Apple TV
Install tvOS 15 Beta on Apple TV 4K
Unlike the Apple TV HD, the Apple TV 4K models do not feature a USB-C port which means things are very different. However, we will vaguely outline what the installation process is like below:
Step 1. Connect your Apple TV 4K to the same network as your Mac on which you have installed the latest Xcode beta
Step 2. Sign into the Apple Developer Program website, go to the Downloads section and then download the latest profile for the tvOS 15 beta
Step 3. Using Xcode, simply install the profile onto your Apple TV 4K and then go to Settings > System > Software Update in order to download tvOS 15 beta over the air
