Although God of War Laufey was the star of the June PlayStation State of Play, the impressive gameplay showcased lacked the most crucial information: the game's release window. In the past few weeks, we heard multiple times the game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment would be released in the first half of 2027, but, according to known Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, the next entry in the series will launch early in the year.
"If you're a God of War Laufey, for example, you might look at the landscape and you might say, 'Hey, I feel like this is going to be our big tentpole release, it's going to be a really good game. It's going to be well reviewed. It's got a lot of really interesting things going for it. We should be able to get a bunch of media attention,' and that's not going to happen if you release anywhere near GTA 6," Schreier said in a new video discussing the impact the next entry in the series is having on the video games industry as a whole.
The GTA 6 effect is going to be keenly felt early in 2027 as well, with so many high-profile releases lining up in the February/March window, and God of War Laufey may very well join the already stacked lineup.
"There are a few more hitting in September and that is going to lead to some losers because again if you are trying to get that customer who only buys two games a year, you are probably not going to have much luck. That is quite a lottery ticket. So some of those games will inevitably slip and what's going to happen is that February and March will be super crowded. I mentioned God of War Laufey. I wouldn't be surprised if that gets announced for February or March pretty soon," Schreier explained.
While it's great to learn that it may not be too long until we are able to experience Laufey's journey ourselves together with the controversial Phranque the Cube into the Afterlife of the Gods and the combination of the fluidity of the Greek Saga with the Norse Saga's personal combat, God of War Laufey targeting a February or March release date is set to make early 2027 almost as bad as September and October 2026 with so many high-profile games launching in the span of days.
As it stands, Fable, Persona 4 Revival, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Metro 2039 are all confirmed for a release in February, and with other games targeting early 2027 for their launches, such as CI Games' Lords of the Fallen 2 and Team NINJA's Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, gamers will once again be forced to make some hard choices that are inevitibly going to impact the success of certain titles.
