God of War TV Series Slips as Amazon Scrambles to Recast Kratos Following Hurst’s On-Set Stunt Injury

Amazon's God of War TV series faces a major setback: recasting the role of Kratos after actor Ryan Hurst suffered an on-set stunt injury.

The Amazon Prime Video God of War TV series has hit a major snag as Kratos actor Ryan Hurst suffered an injury during production. More specifically, he reportedly tore a bicep in late June during a stunt (allegedly while carrying a tree); he has since undergone surgery, but the recovery period will take up to six months, making it unfeasible for the production to keep the actor. As such, the hard decision has been reversed to recast Kratos, partly because waiting for him would inevitably mean that young actor Callum Vinsonwho's playing Kratos's son Atreus, would outgrow the childlike appearance the producers were going for (modeled on 2018's God of War).

It's doubly a shame because production had been underway since February, and four episodes had allegedly already been shot, according to Deadline. This will inevitably delay the TV adaptation, with production set to resume in mid-October, and it now seems unlikely that the series could reach Prime Video before late 2027 or even 2028. Hurst was mainly known for playing Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy and Thor in Santa Monica's God of War games. However, when he was cast for Kratos, several fans complained that he didn't quite look like the right fit. Still, he reportedly worked hard and added a lot of muscle for the role.

The God of War TV series was announced in late 2022 but was restarted from scratch in late 2024 after the showrunner changed from Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) to Ronald D. Moore (Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, For All Mankind). Amazon ordered two seasons, which are being produced back-to-back.
