God of War Crushed an Impressive Sales Milestone in Its First Month
The new God of War has been a big hit with critics and fans, and that enthusiasm has definitely translated into sales. Last time we checked in, the game had moved over 3 million copies in its first three days on sale, and now it’s passed another impressive milestone.
As part of Sony’s recent Investor Relations Day, PlayStation boss John Kodera revealed God of War “exceeded 5 million copies actual sales in one month after release” (thanks to Redditor KeepItRealVR for the translation from Japanese).
5 million copies in only a month makes God of War one of Sony’s fastest-selling games ever. By comparison, God of War III sold only 5.2 million copies over its entire lifetime, and Sony’s biggest 2017 hit, Horizon Zero Dawn, took a year to move around 7.5 million copies. God of War was the best-selling game in April according to the NPD Group, and it should be interesting to see what kind of legs the game has. Will it still be kicking around the top 10 later this year? The game will have a lot of competition, but I think it has a good shot. Perhaps those five sequels director Cory Barlog has planned will actually happen — expect the franchise to be a cornerstone for Sony for some time to come.
Haven’t got a chance to play God of War yet? That’s something you really need to remedy. You can check out Wccf’s perfect 10 review, right here:
“God of War is one of those rare titles that define the console generation. Kratos’ fighting has been refined to its very best and the lands of Midgard are filled with wonders of all manner to explore and defeat. It’s been nearly the entire lifespan of the PlayStation 4 console since Kratos has seen new adventure, but the wait has been absolutely worth it.”
God of War is available now on PS4.
