Gemini Nano Is Actually Coming To Pixel 8 Despite Being Against This Decision In The Start

Apple and Google reportedly in talks to bring Gemini to iPhones

The Pixel 8 is a great phone, and on a hardware level, it is the same as its elder sibling. Due to which you would think that both phones are similar in every way, but that is not the case. For some reason, Google has kept several features limited to the Pro variant, including Gemini Nano. This decision is perhaps the strangest because both phones are running on the same chipset, but Google seems to have backtracked on its decision and decided to bring support to the younger sibling finally.

Pixel 8 is finally getting Gemini Nano, and I hope that the AI model also comes to Pixel 8a

Google has announced that the Pixel 8 will also get support for Gemini Nano as a developer preview in the next Pixel Feature Drop. The company has talked about how the AI model will power two features on the device—Smart Reply in Gboard and summaries in the Recorder app. Google even mentioned that this feature is making its way to the vanilla Pixel a bit later.

Running large language models on phones with different memory specs can deliver different user experiences, so we have been testing and validating this on Pixel 8. We’re excited to provide the opportunity for more enthusiasts and developers to try out Gemini Nano, where we hope to get more feedback and see more innovation.

Although I am glad that Pixel 8 is getting Gemini Nano support, the funny thing is that the reason why Google decided against it in the past is that the sibling has some "hardware limitations." This is strange because aside from the RAM difference, both phones run the same chipset, which makes zero sense.

We will have to wait for Google to start releasing the next Pixel Feature Drop, and when it is finally here, Pixel 8 users will be able to enjoy Gemini Nano and all the good things it has to offer. I really hope that the company does not go ahead and change its mind because that would not be an ideal situation for the users, and I do hope that the overall functionality of the AI model is not crippled in any way. The one thing that I am really interested in finding out is whether or not Gemini Nano is going to be released on Pixel 8a, which will share a lot of similarities with the vanilla Pixel.
