Fortnite Will Have Crossplay on Xbox One After All, But Only With PC & Mobile
Yesterday we reported that, according to Epic’s own statement, Fortnite would only feature crossplay between PC, PlayStation 4 and mobile devices (iOS and later Android).
This seemed to only leave out Microsoft’s console, much to the dismay of Xbox One users. However, The Verge later got a statement from Microsft saying that they were indeed working with Epic to enable crossplay in Fortnite.
We have been working closely with the team at Epic Games for some time to bring this functionality to all current and future versions of Fortnite and expect it to be available on Xbox along with other platforms. Microsoft has long been a leading voice in encouraging the adoption of cross-platform play and the potential of connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles.
Surely enough, a couple hours ago Epic Games published another blog post explaining that this is indeed true, but there’s a caveat.
Hey Fortnite Community,
We’re happy to announce today that in partnership with our friends at Microsoft, Fortnite will feature cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-purchase, between Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS and (in the next few months) Android.
Contrary to what may have been implied, Microsoft has long been a leading voice in supporting cross-platform play, connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles. We’ve been working together with them over the last several months to make this possible and will bring this functionality to Fornite players on Xbox right along with other platforms.
With each new platform we support and every update we ship, we strive to bring Fortnite to more people and make it easier to play together with friends. And, as always, cross-play is opt-in.
As we shared a few days ago, starting Monday you can sign-up for the Fortnite Invite Event on iOS. On phones and tablets, Fortnite is the same 100-player game you know from Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Mac. Same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates.
See you on the Battle Bus,
Basically, there will be two matchmaking pools: PC, PlayStation 4, and mobile; PC, Xbox One, and mobile. It’s also worth noting that PC and console users won’t be able to join mobile lobbies, only the reverse will be possible.
