Control Update Confirmed to Significantly Improve PS4 Performance

Control’s console launch was, quite literally, not as smooth as it could be. Remedy Entertainment’s latest adventure suffered from performance issues on all platforms, but the situation was particularly bad on the base Xbox One and PS4, where the game could dip as low 10 frames per second. Earlier this week Remedy dropped a new patch, which promised to improve performance on consoles, but did it really make that much of a difference? According to a new analysis by the tech heads at Digital Foundry, it seems the answer is yes. If you’ve around 15 minutes to spare, you can check out the full video, below.

So far, Control ver. 1.03 has only been released for PS4, but that was the platform hit hardest by performance issues, so we can probably assume any improvements on Sony’s platform will also carry over to Xbox One and PC when they get the patch. Following the update, Control is now much more consistent on PS4 Pro, with the game now maintaining a mostly-consistent 30fps with occasional dips into the mid-20s. The base PS4 still suffers from frequent dips, but they’re not as severe – for the most part the framerate only drops to the mid-to-low 20s, not all the way down to 10fps like before.

Here’s hoping Remedy can continue to improve Control’s performance, as it’s certainly worth playing. Here’s what Wccftech’s Alessio Palumbo had to say about the game...

Control features Remedy's most original setting yet, the studio's most open-ended game environment yet and great action combat that makes you feel like a badass. The game also stands out on PC as one of the finest examples of real-time ray tracing to date. It shouldn't be passed upon by any action/adventure game fans, even if it's not quite a masterpiece.

Control is available now on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
