CAPCOM Brings Tifa To Street Fighter 6 In Year 4 Lineup, Returning Her To Fighting Games After 27 Years

As per tradition, CAPCOM has revealed the Street Fighter 6 Year 4 character lineup during Summer Game Fest, which is set to top previous years' lineups. While fan favorites like M. Bison, Sagat, C. Viper Alex, and guest characters like Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui were brought to the game in the past few years, this year will see the arrival of some brand new characters, but also another surprising guest character: Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII.

The game's Year 4 lineup was revealed during today's Summer Game Fest showcase. Surprisingly enough, Tifa was the only part of earlier leaks that was correct, as the rest of the lineup features no returning characters: Arjun, Yasmine, and Bosh.

While none of the characters have been shown in action, it has been revealed that Materia will be completely reimagined as a gameplay system specifically tailored for Tifa. Furthermore, developers teased that an iconic element from the Final Fantasy series will also be adapted into her battle experience, a mechanic that is highly likely to be the Limit Break system.

Despite having been released 3 years ago, Street Fighter 6 remains as popular as ever, if not more so. With the release of Alex and Ingrid in March and May, respectively, the game broke its previous peak concurrent players, further solidifying the latest entry in the series as one of the most popular fighting games of the current generation. However, I fully expect these peaks to be broken again when some of the Year 4 characters launch, especially Tifa, whose appeal goes far beyond the boundaries of the series or of other fighting games.

Street Fighter 6's continued popularity doesn't surprise me in the least. At launch, I scored the game 10/10, finding it “the culmination of the experience CAPCOM introduced to the video gaming world back in 1987.”
