Unscheduled Android 8.1 Update Arrives for Pixel 2, Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X
Some Google Pixel 2 devices started receiving an unscheduled Android 8.1 update last week way ahead of the February Patch Tuesday. After receiving the scheduled January security patch earlier this month, some users reported receiving a second update from the Pixel maker. At the time, there were no details available and the update wasn’t showing up on the official Google’s factory images page.
The carrier-specific Google Pixel 2 Android 8.1 update is a second January update that is finally showing up on the official downloads page. Carrying the build number OPM2.171019.016, the build is available exclusively for Verizon Google Pixel 2 units. However, Pixel 2 isn’t the only device receiving this special treatment. Nexus 6P on the Japanese carrier Softbank is also receiving build number OPM5.171019.014; the Telstra and Softbank Nexus 5X units are receiving a new build too.
The Android maker is yet to share what these updates are bringing onboard to these specific units, as even after installation of these latest builds, they remain on the January security patch. The January update did bring performance issues for a number of Pixel users, however, it remains unclear if that problem was specific to some carriers.
The updates come just two weeks ahead of the February security patches, which shows that something critical might be getting fixed through these carrier-specific builds. Some users had reported that a Google Assistant bug was fixed, while another had said music playback issue was addressed. While we are writing to Google to get a confirmation on what exactly is being fixed or improved through these updates, it might be wiser to download them asap instead of waiting for the changelog.
