Google has started to release the January security patch to its Pixel and Nexus devices. Today's rollout follows last month's mega release of the Android 8.1 Oreo. While the last update brought in a number of features, today's release is focusing more on the performance improvements and bug fixes, not to forget the security patches.

The company has fixed over 20 security vulnerabilities in the January security patch dated 2018-01-01 and 18 in the patch dated 2018-01-05. Some of these bugs are rated critical, affecting the media framework enabling an attacker to remotely execute arbitrary code through specially crafted files. The release also fixes several Denial of Service bugs rated high in severity. All of these affect even the most latest versions of Android, making these fixes extremely important.

Google promises that there are no reported cases of these vulnerabilities being used in the wild. "We have had no reports of active customer exploitation or abuse of these newly reported issues," the company said.
