AMD Ryzen 7 8700G APU Gets A 15% Boost In AI Performance When Using Faster DDR5 Memory 1

AMD's Ryzen 8000G APUs launch today and we have a new report which showcased how the memory scaling impacts the AI performance of these chips, such as the Ryzen 7 8700G, when running higher-clocked memory kits.

AMD Ryzen 7 8700G APU Scaling With MSI "Memory Try It" Showcased: Up To 15% NPU Boost With DDR5-7600

The latest test results come from hardware insider chi11eddog who has posted benchmarks of the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G APU in AI-specific workloads such as UL Procyon AI and GIMP stable diffusion. The reviews for the AMD Ryzen 8000G are already out and mostly focused on the two most major aspects, the CPU and iGPU/dGPU performance while AI benchmarks weren't highlighted that much.

The AMD Ryzen 8000G APUs are based on the newer Hawk Point silicon and as such feature up to 16 AI TOPs within their Ryzen AI "XDNA" NPU. For the performance testing, the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G APU was tested on an MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi motherboard with two 16 GB DDR5 sticks set to stock and up to 7600 MT/s speeds.

In the UL Procyon AI inference benchmark, the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G scored 210 Float32 TOPs using the DDR5-4800 memory but as soon as the APU was set to DDR5-7600, it saw a 15% boost. This shows that the new APUs are still somewhat reliant on bandwidth when it comes to their NPU's AI performance. You can also see memory scaling results at DDR5-6000 and DDR5-7200.

The second test was conducted within GIMP with Stable Diffusion and utilized the Radeon 780M iGPU featured on the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G APU. This iGPU is very strong and also heavily starved of bandwidth. However, in Stable Diffusion, you get 4% faster image generation which shows that at least in this specific workload, the benefits of faster memory aren't as big as with gaming performance. You might have also noticed that the top memory speeds were achieved with MSI's Memory Try It feature. These are overclock-specific profiles featured on MSI's AM5 motherboards which are designed to specifically tune memory kits to achieve the fastest performance on MSI's motherboards.

The AMD Ryzen 8000G APUs are the fastest desktop chips on the market when we talk about iGPUs and they are also the first on the market to feature an NPU on the desktop platform. This is a huge deal for desktop consumers. Our review of the Ryzen 8000G APUs goes live soon so stay tuned for more details.
