Apple's Vision Pro pre-orders went live on January 19, and it was initially speculated that the headset's demand would be less than expected. However, less than two weeks after pre-orders went live, Apple has sold almost 200,000 units of the Vision Pro. The device is showing promising results in the first ten days. However, the numbers are on a downward trend compared to last week.
Apple only sold 20,000 Vision Pro units in the past week, showing a downward trend in demand
Last week, prominent industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the company managed to secure 160,000 to 180,000 pre-orders for the headset. According to the latest information from MacRumors, sources familiar with the matter claim that Apple has sold almost 200,000 units of the Vision Pro. There are two aspects that are worth noting with the latest information.
It was initially rumored that Apple would produce 60,000 to 80,000 units of the Vision Pro for the February 2 launch. While Kuo's speculation regarding the headset's demand was somewhat true, the Vision Pro has exceeded expectations with initial shipments. It was also reported last week that the company managed to ship up to 180,000 headset units in the initial week. This means that the demand is facing a downward trend, as only 20,000 units of the Vision Pro were pre-ordered.
While the pre-orders have slowed, some customers could be waiting for in-store availability as shipment dates have stretched to March for the Vision Pro. This could be one of the reasons why pre-orders have slowed down over the past week. We could see improved demand after Apple has catered to shipment delays. The company's Vision Pro's first-day shipments sold out a few hours after the pre-orders went live. Additionally, the in-store pick-up option followed shortly after, resulting in the headset's delayed delivery that stretches to March.
While the shipments will improve going forward, Vision Pro demand will not nearly go as high as Apple's iPhone or iPad. This is due to the device's niche market and a hefty price tag. If you are interested in getting your hands on the Vision Pro, it will cost you as much as $3,499 for the base model. This eliminates most users out of the equation, resulting in fewer units sold.
It was previously reported that the Vision Pro Media Reviews would go live on Tuesday, which could boost sales further as users would have more information about the device. However, the company is already prepared for fewer sales due to the device's price and the complex production process. Apple is expected to manufacture around 500,000 units of the Vision Pro initially, and it remains to be seen if the company will exceed its expectations.
