Valve Has Done Some Prototyping with Half-Life In Virtual Reality
During GDC Valve demoed it's new HTC Vive, and with it they also demoed a Virtual Reality version and tech-demo of Portal, running on the source 2 engine. Now the question is, have they tried using some of the Half-Life assets when building their VR demos? Well it would appear as they have, Valve admitted to experimenting with characters and weapons from Half-Life to see what they could cook up.
No this does not mean that Half-Life 3 is Confirmed
During GDC the guys over at Kotaku asked a few questions of one of the Valve Programmers.
"We've said, 'Let's take some existing art and see how it fits,'" Valve programmer Jeep Barnett told Kotaku during an interview. "So yeah, we'll grab some headcrabs, we'll grab the machine guns from Half-Life, the rocket launcher—all those different fun things—and see how they play in VR. But right now, it's a tool for exploring the different kind of game designs we want to do."
Barnett mentioned that when they do experiments like this, sometimes they spawn completely new games, as was the case with Portal, which came to be from doing some experiments with Half-Life assets. But that they currently don't have any plans for making a Half-Life VR game, which HTC accidentally hinted at in the recent weeks. But it's not out of the question either.
"We're not saying, 'no,'" he said, "but we don't know what the right thing is [yet]. Our most precious resource is time, and we don't have enough time for people to do everything. Would we like to make all of our franchises in VR? Absolutely. But we don't have enough time or people. So we have to figure out what's the best fit, what plays to the strengths of VR."
"Is Half-Life a good fit? Is Left 4 Dead a good fit? Is a new franchise a good fit? I don't know yet. We're really trying to cover the broad spectrum of what we could do, and then we'll start focusing on spearheading that."
So yet again we have some teasing from Valve going on, but as pointed out in the quotes, there's nothing being worked on right now, and what little work they have done probably got put into the Portal VR demo.
