Taiwan just experienced one of the strongest earthquakes yesterday, but the world's largest chipmaker, TSMC, reports that its fab operations have now resumed.

TSMC's Chip Operations Aren't Affected by Taiwan's Recent Earthquake, Given the Firm's Emergency Measures

For those unaware, Taiwan was recently struck by a massive earthquake, with a reported magnitude of 7.0 and a depth of 72.8 kilometers. The intensity of the earthquake was rated at level 4, resulting in staff evacuations at TSMC's facilities located in Hsinchu Science Park. Based on TSMC's statement to local media, emergency measures were taken in accordance with safety standards, and no damage has been reported yet, with all plants operating at full capacity. Interestingly, the status of the affected facilities was restored within just ten hours after the earthquake, indicating TSMC's resilience in such matters.

When it comes to TSMC, earthquake activity becomes significant for the chip giant, given the importance of its production lines running seamlessly. TSMC is a 24/7 operating entity, and there's no doubt that with the AI frenzy, the firm has become one of the most critical assets to the tech industry. And, if there's a slight halt in production, not only does it result in operating losses, but also compromised delivery times, especially since fabs in the Hsinchu Science Park are responsible for producing some of the world's most high-end chips.

In April 2024, TSMC experienced one of the largest earthquakes in Taiwan, resulting in a $92.4 million loss. Similarly, in Q1 2025, the Taiwan giant faced losses of $162 million associated with discarded semiconductor wafers due to earthquake activity. Since then, it has been reported that TSMC has paid special attention to emergency measures, which is why, even after an earthquake of magnitude 7.0, the firm hasn't seen any structural damage, with production recovering rapidly.

TSMC has become one of the most sought-after entities in the AI world, as it produces a significant portion of the world's semiconductors, which are vital for companies like NVIDIA, Apple, and AMD. And, this is one of the reasons why the Taiwan chip giant ensures that its operations aren't affected by external factors.
