Is Square Enix Teasing Another New Game? Star Ocean?

Going completely unnoticed by many due to Square Enix's radical Can't Kill Progress event that announced Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, a new, lone and very puzzling web page has surfaced. And it very well might indicate the return of Star Ocean.

Star Ocean may be returning to consoles, if the teaser page is indeed about Star Ocean.

The page itself is relatively barren except for a photo of an ocean from orbit with three letters, S A R, that are widely space, followed by the numbers 0101 below. Gamesradar seems to think that it's a teaser page for a new Star Ocean. And though the evidence doesn't necessarily point towards that franchise, it's a logical choice given the letters and the contents of the photo. You can easily spell Star with just those letters, and 'Ocean' can be assumed from the background image. The pages source doesn't reveal any info, sadly.

0101, however, doesn't necessarily fit that assumption. If those numbers are binary, then it's the number 5, translated into hex it equals 50. In BASE32 it's KA, BASE64 UA==, ASCII85, however, it's a smily face or literally :]. Hmmm. Perhaps this indicates a fifth entry into Star Ocean? That's the answer that's being posed by the gaming media at large, but there are already five titles, though only four in North America. So wouldn't the next release then be the sixth game?

Interestingly, Yosuke Matsuda, the president of Square Enix, said back in March that there would be more announcements and news relating to the JRPG market.

“Starting with Final Fantasy XV, we’ll be putting out news for Japanese RPGs.”

-Yosuke Matsuda

It should come as no surprise, then, that something is being teased, but exactly what is still unknown. I think it's a little premature to jump to conclusions based on an unknown quantity. Sure, it looks convenient and too good to be true, but don't get your hopes up just yet. I'd love another Star Ocean to grace consoles once again, but the information we have is just too sparse. It could even be new IP altogether.

But JRPG fans, gear up for something to be revealed in the coming days. Star Ocean fans, this may be the return to greatness we've been waiting for.
