When Final Fantasy VII Remake launched on PlayStation 4 in 2020, fans of the series wondered whether the trilogy was actually a sequel to the original, or just a simple remake. As the number of players asking this themselves has only increased since Square Enix released the first two entries in the series on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, it has become the core element of the debate surrounding the series. And Final Fantasy VII Revelation will finally provide the answer to this question, while delivering what director Naoki Hamaguchi expects to be one of the most appreciated Synergy Skills between two beloved characters.
Remake or Sequel?
Spanish publication Hobby Consolas recently spoke with Hamaguchi-san about whether the Remake trilogy is a sequel to the original.
"I think it's best not to answer, confirm, or deny anything for now, as we will be releasing Revelation, the final chapter, next year. What I can say is that the overall concept, the idea behind the Final Fantasy VII Remake saga, is to create a new world, a new narrative of Final Fantasy VII that includes all the elements previously shown in the FFVII spin-offs," Hamaguchi-san said.
While the Final Fantasy VII Revelation director couldn't answer this question as "both answers are possible," he did tease that the answer will arrive with the third entry in the series.
"So all I can say for now is that I hope the fans are eager to discover the big reveal at the end of the story and the answers we're going to give them," Hamaguchi-san said.
Considering how Final Fantasy VII Remake more than suggested that things may have been different in the original with the involvement of the Whispers, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth proceeded as expected, with only the ending doubling down on what the first entry in the series suggested. Hopefully, we will indeed get a clear-cut answer to end the debate once and for all with the conclusion of the trilogy.
Teasing Cid and Barret's Synergy Ability
Besides teasing how Final Fantasy VII Revelation will put an end to the raging debate, Hamaguchi-san has also recently teased something regarding Synergy Abilities, the special combination attacks between characters. Speaking with content creator Jess Capricon, the Remake trilogy director said that he believes players will really enjoy one of the Synergy Abilities between Cid and Barret.
While he didn't add much more on it, it's not surprising to learn that Barret is once again at the core of one of the best-looking Synergy Abilities in the third entry in the series. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's Sweet-and-Sour sees Aerith don a pair of sunglasses like Barret, which was a small but hilarious interaction that provided more of the attention to detail and characterization that makes the Remake trilogy so engaging.
All the above, plus the Highwind gameplay set to redefine the series' scope, the challenging endgame, and the new playable characters, have already made Final Fantasy VII Revelation one of the most anticipated games of 2027. Hopefully, we won't have to wait much longer for another glimpse at the epic conclusion of the Remake trilogy.
